“Studies”

At the beginning of all artistic processes there is usually an idea. In studies, the idea is given an initial, often unfinished form. The raw, spontaneous and unfinished character of sketches, gives this art form its own appeal. Working quickly at this point of origin of the design process, these works possess endless dynamism and expressiveness.

Studies are useful tools in testing new ideas. What may already exist vaguely in the mind as an idea can be concretized on paper. Forms emerge. Through strokes, lines and hatchings new formations emerge. However, these works of art are not about using the sketches to create a finished painting or perfectly executed image. They are in themselves already finished works, which live from imperfection and dynamics. The omission is an essential part of it. The abstract and gestural images thus leave room for interpretation and allow numerous associations. With deeper observations one recognizes different forms and approaches. They are very demanding and complex structures that demand a lot from the recipient, since no clear outlines are recognizable. The free works were also created without a conscious idea of a specific form and precise image content. They were developed very spontaneously and intuitively, directly during the process of creation. Nevertheless, some things are recognizable and allow an individual identification with the respective study. The strokes are an expression of life and artistic creativity, which they capture in a pure and unfiltered way. The working process in different series is in the foreground and the always different results testify to the infinite variety of expression. The way of sketching up is already also the goal of these works.

«Atelier scholarship Berlin»

From October 2020 to January 2021 I am working in Berlin Wedding thanks to an atelier scholarship from the central Swiss cantons.
Due to the scholarship, I currently can not accept any commissions in Switzerland.

Graffitiproject 2020: «600 Years Stansstad»

Important: Due to the current situation, all projects of the anniversary year were postponed to 2021.

As an artist in residence, Adrian Gander accompanies the anniversary year with visual art (street art & graffiti).

An important goal is to bring the medium of graffiti closer to people.
Therefore there are two public workshop days in summer, where interested people can try out and realize themselves creatively (registrations by mid-July to adrian@anoy.ch / +41 79 275 71 25). The sprayed pictures aesthetically enhance the work yard and the fire station.

Adrian Gander is also present at five major events during the anniversary year and captures these events visually on a wooden wall in front of the old station building. This wall is continuously redesigned on both sides – spread over the anniversary year.

The audience can follow the respective creation process of the works live.

Dates for the two workshop days:

July 31 (replacement date: August 1)
August 15 (replacement date: August 16)

Anniversary events with simultaneous visualization:

January 2: New Year’s aperitif with the light show by G. Hofstetter
May 29: Spring congregation and book opening
June 14: Ecumenical mass and vernissage of the exhibition by P. Wagner
July 31: Simultaneous painting campaign at the federal celebration of OK31
18/19. September: BadiOpenAir

As far as the weather allows it, the respective work will be realized simultaneously or as soon as possible.

«ENCOUNTERS»

2017
Fribourg, Switzerland

The graffito‘s idea was to visualize the encounters and platform, which St. Justin makes avaiable to students all over the world. My inspiration was the «going and coming» oft the students. The artwork refers to expirience which will grow with accumulated memories and travelling around the world. Also the mural symbolises all the colors oft he world and all the different religions and ethnicities. The encounter ist also an important topic of this mural painting. In this place many people are united, inspired and changed. The image is a sign of beeing welcomed to all people who pass by. I do hope, that the living colors will be a source of inspiration, strength and hope. «Realizing this mural was a very mediative and spiritual work. Day after day I was spending 8 hours with colors and shapes. Sometimes I got lost in these bright and charming colors. I put a lot of emotions into this cold piece of concret, wich, with the help of love, I turned into a uplifting piece of art. The reactions of the people walking by always motivated me to push my work further and also I had access to different views and interpretations about the painting. Basically, the motif is very open for individual reflections of the respective recipients. There is no right or wrong in how the image could be interpreted. Everyone may see what he wants to see since the perception is very subjectiv and varies according to the person. And exactly this makes the encounter with the mural unique for each individual.»

The mural in figures:

Over 50 square meters of mural surface
Over 24 meters in the horizontal
Over 4 meters in the vertical at the highest point
Over 160 working hours for concept and realization
Over 28 liters of color
Over 70 aerosol cans
Over 8 months time passed from the idea to the realization.
The wall had to wait 12 years until it was painted. 91 nationalities live in the Campus St. Justin

The history of the mural:

Construction of the wall 2005
Idea for design: December 2016, meeting More Ranft
Starting point: Jan. 2017, creation of the concept
Start of realization: July 13th 2017
End of realization: July 25th 2017

«LET THE PEACE FLOW NOT THE WAR GROW»

2015
Hamra, Beirut, Libanon

This wall is another huge mural I painted on the busy streets of Hamra in Beirut. It‘s content is about peace and hapiness which are visualized by brightly colored shapes that form abstract birds and nature. The spot where the wall is situated was heavily marked by war between different religions during many years. The intention of the painting is to intensify the positivity and peace in such a melting pot of various cultures and religions. The diversity of many colors and shapes represents the different aspects and cultures of people living and working in this area.

«WALL OF PEACE»

2015
Beit-Habbak, Libanon

This wall is located along the road heading to Beit-Habbak, a small village in the mountains of Lebanon. There are a lot of holes in the raw concrete wall, which are used for shelters by birds. This artwork is a product of intuitive painting. I didn‘t use a ladder, or a scaffold. In order to reach the upper spots on the 15 meters high wall, I used to operate with a pole. To paint this huge graffito I relied myself on the simple method of dispersion painting. Thematically the image reflects the contrasts between nature and technology and points out the feathered inhabitants of our planet.
